In Australia some of the words we use are different to the American words.

Here’s a list I’ve put together of some words and phrases that have been “translated” so y’all know what we are talking about! :)

G’day mate – Hello

How’s it going? – How are you?

Ta – Thank you

You beauty/ripper! – That’s great!

Mum – Mom

Sheila – Woman/girl

Bloke – Man

Hard yakka – Hard work

Arvo – Afternoon

Jam – Jelly

Jelly – Jello

Sultanas – Raisins

Fairy floss – Cotton Candy

Biscuit – Cookie

Scone – Biscuit

Iceblock – Popsicle

Lollies – Candy

Capsicum – Bell pepper

Hot chips – Fries

Tomato sauce – Ketchup

Soft drink – Soda/Pop

Cuppa - Tea

Rockmelon – Cantaloupe

Serviette – Napkin

Shopping center – Mall

Supermarket – Grocery store

Trolley - Cart

Macca’s – McDonalds

Primary school – Elementary school

Dunny/loo – Restroom

Thongs – Flip flops

Jumper – Sweater

Knickers – Underwear

Trackies – Sweat pants

Singlet – Tank top

Swimmers/togs – Bathing suit
